Ask AI

Highlight any text in a filing and a small toolbar appears. From the toolbar, you can ask the AI about the passage, save a note, copy a link to that exact spot, or flag the passage.

Selection toolbar

Select at least 3 characters of text and the toolbar appears above the selection, with these actions:

• Ask AI (sparkle icon): Ask a question about the passage.
• Note (document icon): Save a private note on that spot. See notes.
• Copy link (link icon): Copy a link that opens the filing at that exact passage.
• Flag (flag icon): Mark the passage yourself as positive, notable, a concern, or routine. Shows only while Sift is on. See Sift analysis.

Ask a question

Select "Ask AI", then type your own question in the box or choose a quick question:

• Explain in plain English
• Why does this matter?
• What are the key numbers?

The AI answers from the passage you selected, the paragraph around the passage, the section's name, and Sift's summary of that section when Sift has run. When a selection spans several paragraphs, the AI gets the first one.

Each question needs a free account and costs 2 credits on the Standard model, 20 on Pro, and 60 on Max. Select "Save as note" to keep an answer, or "Ask another way" to go back to the questions.

On a paid plan, "Ask AI settings" (gear icon) in the Ask AI panel sets your own AI voice and replaces the three quick questions with your own.

Asking about the whole filing

Ask AI answers about the passage you selected. To ask about the entire document instead, use Ask this filing, the chat in the bottom right corner.

Copy link

Copy link gives you a link that opens the filing at the exact passage you selected, even one that spans several paragraphs. The link is the clean way to point someone to one line in a long filing, or to save the spot for yourself.

On a phone: The toolbar works there too. Press and hold to select text, and the same toolbar appears at the bottom.
